<p>We&#8217;re currently  in the 21st century, and stress is everywhere, and it&#8217;s a &#8220;killer.&#8221;  Learning to live with stress in a healthy way is the trick.  If ignored, stress can wreck havoc with your vascular system and destroy important areas of your brain.  We can&#8217;t eliminate stress, but we can change our reaction to it. I learned from my parents to try to be happy.  They didn&#8217;t elaborate, but the truth is our life follows our thoughts, not the other way around.</p>

<p>Each of us has the power within us to guide our life!  I didn&#8217;t say control, I said guide. Okay, what happens if we do the opposite?  Chronic stress, just like excess alcohol (and they all too frequently go hand in hand), leads to sleep deprivation . . . and worse.  It is possible for us to shrink the size of our hippocampus, deep within the brain, and start losing memory cells, become erratic, and lose our way in life.I&#8217;m not a psychiatrist or a brain scientist, but, as a cardiologist, I&#8217;ve come to realize that whatever is good for the heart is also good for the brain, and vice versa.</p>
