Okay, what happens if we do the opposite? Chronic stress, just like excess alcohol (and they all too frequently go hand in hand), leads to sleep deprivation . . . and worse. It is possible for us to shrink the size of our hippocampus, deep within the brain, and start losing memory cells, become erratic, and lose our way in life.

I’m not a psychiatrist or a brain scientist, but, as a cardiologist, I’ve come to realize that whatever is good for the heart is also good for the brain, and vice versa. We’ve known for years that patients who have severe depression after a heart attack have a greater chance of dying. The heart and the brain are solidly paired. So we just have to learn one set of conditions to help both organs become healthier.

I’ve tried hard in this DVD to provide you with an understanding of the dangers of unaltered stress and how to change it to your advantage. It’s one thing to read about this; it’s quite another to hear it from someone who has incorporated this in his cardiac practice for 30 years.

I’m addressing this issue just as I always have: with emphasis on behavioral changes to protect your heart. But what I’ve learned over the last few years is that, in the process, you’re also protecting your brain!
